Ginger, The Spicy Root!

Ginger root from Madagascar

Ginger, the plant! This reed-like plant named Ginger(Zingiber officinale Roscoe) is native to the coastal region of India. It has been used in China before written history began. Marco Polo saw this plant in China between 1280 and 1290 A.D. Its name interpreted from the Greek, Arabic, and Indian means, “Known already to the ancient.” Ginger, the common name is derived from the Sanskrit “gringa” or horn and “vera” meaning body, in reference to the shape of the root. Ginger stimulates the secretions of ingestive fluids that lower cholesterol ( Samadi, 2022), helps with motion sickness (Haniadka, 2013) and morning sickness. The Chinese value this stimulating plant and add it to their meat dishes to detoxify it. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, they have used Ginger in their herbal formulations to warm the stomach and spleen (middle) and disperse the cold and alleviate vomiting (Hunt R et al., 2013).

Ginger also has an effect on a circulation, because of the stimulating volatile oils it contains. This valuable root has the ability to purify the blood and is valuable when indications of flu start coming on. It has also been used as a female and male tonic, liver, and kidneys, because of its effectiveness when used with other herbs.

Ginger, the Hydrosol!

Ginger water (hydrosol) along with Thyme water (hydrosol) from the steam distillation has been shown to detoxify and have antioxidant effects. Therefore, it is recommended to use them to avoid alcohol toxicity (Shati, 2009). 3 tbsps daily for 10 days per month.

Try this formulation to help you with Aches and Pains.

Ginger, the Essential Oil!

Warming, delightfully spicy, light yellow to dark yellow, aromatic, and strengthening is the essential oils of Ginger. The root is steam distilled. The Ginger essential oil warms the body internally. “Ginger has a pain-reducing effect and it can modulate pain through various mechanisms: inhibition of prostaglandins via the COX and LOX-pathways, antioxidant activity, inhibition of the transcription factor nf-kB, or acting as an agonist of vanilloid nociceptor (Rondanelli 2020).”

Ginger, the Flower.

Ginger, the Flower Essence

Ginger flower essence was a research flower when I first started using it and this is what my experience was like with this quite beautiful flower. I felt warmer physically, especially in the lower trunk. My mind was clearer and very calm. I was able to handle situations constructively with others. I could speak my true feelings in a warm and calm way. This flower helped me in relationships and communication.

Yellow ginger – Flower Essence

Relaxing to your body and your mind. Helps alleviate anxiety and panic attacks. Brings your energy down into your body, therefore grounding and stabilizing.

When we can relax, we can rejoice and know that all is well.
These flowers are carefully hand-gathered and made into our healing flower essences which: Yellow GingerFlower Essence helps your mind & body to let go and RELAX.

Applications: Excellent used topically and in massage to release muscle tension and pain.

Take 5 drops under the tongue or in water, juice, or tea. Place 10 drops in your water bottle.

Use topically, rub into hands, wrists, back of the neck, and places of tension or tight muscles. (https://hawaiianrainforestnaturals.com/product/ginger-flower-essence-relax/, 2022)

Anxiety- Emotional Healing with Essential Oils and Flower Essences

Hello,

Did you know how many people suffer with Anxiety? According to the Anxiety Disorder Statistics. Anxiety Disorders affect 18.1 percent of adults in the United States (approximately 40 million adults between the ages of 18 to 54). – National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).

This is a lot of people and it seems to be growing. We can look at society in general and see why everything is going at lightning speed and yes our brains work fast but do our emotions? Well, the answer to that is a BIG FAT “NO” ! We have to have time to process our emotions. It is difficult to go from identifying an emotion and recognizing where it came from and then go straight to solution. It is IMPORTANT that we give ourselves time to process the emotion, recognize why we feel that way and where it all begin otherwise we are constantly being worried by the same thing,  in our present or past that can lead to Anxiety and no solution how to resolve it and let it go.

So Before we go to solution which is what we all want to do instead of going through the process. Let’s look at what anxiety is? Anxiety is a feeling of unease, such as worry or fear, that can be mild or severe.

We all have some anxiety in our lives at point or another. For example- you could feel anxious before a test, performance or job interview which is perfectly normal. However if you are spending most of your day worrying and it is affecting your day, then you need to recognize it and seek help.

Here are several conditions where Anxiety can be the main symptom:

  • panic disorder
  • phobias such as agoraphobia or claustrophobia
  • post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • social anxiety disorder (social phobia)

Today,  I am only discussing generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) which is a chronic condition that causes you to feel anxious about a lot of situations and issues, rather than one specific event. I call it being a worry wart. This is where you are anxious most days and you have a hard time remembering when you felt relaxed. Usually as soon as one anxious thought or worry is resolved, another one appears.

This can cause mental and physical symptoms.

Mental Symptoms:

  1. Trouble sleeping
  2. Feeling restless/ worried
  3. Not being able to concentrate
  4. Irritated
  5. Constantly on “edge”
  6. Sense of dread
  7. Socially withdrawn from family and friends
  8. Find work difficult or stressful and start taking more days off

All these symptoms can lead to more worry,  lower the self esteem and escalate the Anxiety

Physical symptoms:

  1. Heart palpitations
  2. dizziness
  3. tiredness
  4. muscle aches and tension
  5. trembling or shaking
  6. dry mouth
  7. excessive sweating
  8. shortness of breath
  9. stomach ache
  10. feeling sick
  11. headache
  12. pin and needles
  13. difficulty falling or staying asleep (insomnia)

What can trigger Anxiety?

If you know what is causing your anxiety such as a specific phobia like claustrophobia you would know that being confined in a small space will trigger your anxiety. Not knowing what is triggering your GAD then it can intensify the anxiety and you may start to worry that there is no solution.

However, if you have GAD there are  self -help treatments that could be help easy the symptoms of anxiety yourself.

Self Help Suggestions:

Try an online course with a trained therapist or go to a cognitive behavioural therapist

This usually involves working from a book or computer programme for around six weeks or longer. In some cases, you may be closely supported by a trained therapist who you’ll speak to every week or two. Some treatments only involve minimal or occasional contact with a therapist, who monitors your progress. Also cognitive behavioural therapy is very beneficial for anxiety. It can help you understand your condition and learn ways to manage your anxiety by modifying negative or unhelpful thoughts and behavior.

Exercise

Exercise regularly, particularly aerobic exercise, may help you combat stress because it encourages the brain to release serotonin which improves your mood helping you to not worry so much.

Good aerobic exercises include:

  • walking fast or jogging
  • swimming
  • cycling
  • tennis
  • hiking
  • football or rugby
  • aerobics

Learn to relax

As well as regular exercise, learning how to relax is important.

You may find relaxation and breathing exercises helpful, or you may prefer activities such as yoga or pilates to help you unwind.

You can also try this

Avoid caffeine

Drinking too much caffeine can make you more anxious than normal. This is because caffeine can disrupt your sleep and also speed up your heartbeat. If you’re tired, you’re less likely to be able to control your anxious feelings.

Avoiding drinks containing caffeine – such as coffee, tea, fizzy drinks and energy drinks – may help to reduce your anxiety levels.

Avoid smoking and drinking

Smoking and alcohol have been shown to make anxiety worse. Only drinking alcohol in moderation or stopping smoking may help to reduce your anxiety.

Essential Oils for Anxiety:

Lavender, Grapefruit and Patchouli are the essential oils that I am going to use today for you to make an Anxiety Spray.

Sore Throat – Aroma Gargling!

According to Mayo Clinic, “A sore throat is pain, scratchiness or irritation of the throat that often worsens when you swallow.

The most common cause of a sore throat (pharyngitis) is a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu. A sore throat caused by a virus resolves on its own.

A study suggests, “Aroma gargling can be utilized as an effective nursing intervention for decreasing thirst, halitosis, and sore throat for patients with spine surgery in clinical practice.”

  1.  In the study, essential oils of peppermint, tea tree, and lemon in a ratio 1:2:2 were used on patients
  2. Significant differences in the degrees of thirst, halitosis, and sore throat according to interaction between group and duration.
  3. In the comparison among 3 groups, aroma gargling provided better oral health by decreasing thirst, halitosis, and sore throat for patients with spine surgery.

Learn how to do aroma gargling with these 3 essential oils.

Aroma Sore Throat Gargle:

2 drops Lemon essential oil

2 drops Tea Tree essential oil

1 drop Peppermint essential oil

4Tbsps sea salt

1 glass of warm water.

Mix the sea salt and essential oils in a bowl. Place 1 tsp sea salt mixture in a glass and add warm water, continue to stir the water until the sea salt mixture has dissolved into the water. Then gargle twice daily or when the throat feels sore.

Contraindications: Do not use in pregnancy, lactation, or with children under 2 years of age.

Think zinc too, the latest study of the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology found zinc as a cold remedy between 75mg and 100mg daily in zinc acetate lozenges, reduced the length of a cold by nearly 3 days- close to half the 7-day average. Here is zinc that you can take orally and zinc lozenges to use to soothe your throat.

Leave your comments below and let me know what you gargle with for a sore throat.

Hope this helps your sore throat.

Better Health and Happiness,

Lorrie

Is it a Cold or the Flu?

Signs of the common cold or the flu can be a little sniffle or cough.

How can you tell whether you have a cold or flu?

The most important thing is knowing the difference between a cold and the flu. The common cold is a viral infection of your upper respiratory tract (nose, nasal cavity, mouth, throat, and larynx). Most often caused by common human coronaviruses or rhinoviruses. The infection is typically harmless. A cold might last as little as a few days or as long as a couple of weeks.

Cold Symptoms include:

  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat
  • Coughing
  • Watery eyes
  • Sneezing
  • Congestion

Usually, with a cold, you might only have one, two, or all of these symptoms, and the severity can range from delicate sneeze to room-silencing hacking. While the common cold is unpleasant most people recover fairly quickly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “common colds are the main reason that children miss school and adults miss work. Each year in the United States, millions of people get the common cold. Adults have an average of 2-3 colds per year, and children have even more.”

The flu, on the other hand, is more serious.
The flu, or influenza, is a dangerous and highly contagious disease caused by the influenza virus. Each year, the flu causes millions of illnesses, hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations, and results in thousands of deaths. Many flu symptoms are similar to cold symptoms. Flu symptoms are typically more severe. A cold might force you to tote a tissue box around for a few days, but the flu can leave you bedridden.

The difference between the cold and the flu is the high fever. The flu comes with a higher fever. Both cold and flu can lead to other health complications. The flu can lead to pneumonia and lung infections, and complications can lead to death. The flu you need to nip in the bud immediately when it comes on. More about that in my next blog post.

Common cold

Several different viruses can cause a cold, but rhinoviruses are the most common cause. Wash your hands often throughout cold and flu season. Essential oils such as eucalyptus, niaouli, ravintsara, and rosemary all contain a chemical constituent called Eucalyptol or 1.8 cineole that is known to help the body with viruses. When you start having some sniffles, runny or stuffed up nose, and feel a cold starting to come on, try these 3 healthy tips with these essential oils.

Runny or Stuffed up nose

Sinus Inhalation:

5 drops Eucalyptus globulous or Eucalyptus radiata essential oil

1 bowl warm water

1 towel

Bring water to boil, add essential oil. Then take off the stove. Place a towel over your head as you breathe in the vapors for 10 – 20 minutes three times daily.

Contraindications: Do not use Eucalyptus in pregnancy, lactation, and children under 10 years old. For children from 3-8 years of age use 1 drop of Ravintsara in 1 bowl of warm water.

Sore throat

Usually, a cold starts with a sore throat. You can immediately start with a throat gargle to help reduce the inflammation in the tonsils and throat.

Sore Throat gargle:

Cough due to a Cold

Cough

Coughs are common during a cold and are “productive” getting the germy mucus out of your lungs when you’re sick. Most will go away in a few days. After a cold, though, some “dry” cough lasts weeks or months because coughing irritates your lungs.

Dry Cough formulation:

8 drops Roman chamomile essential oil

8 drops Lemon essential oil

1oz. carrier oil (Almond or Apricot)

1oz. amber bottle

Place essential oils and carrier oil in an amber bottle. Roll the bottle between your hands to thoroughly mix the ingredients. Apply to chest, back, and corresponding reflex points on the hands and feet 3 times daily.

Sleeplessness due to Anxiety and Depression Case Study

Anna Owusu, Certified Aromatherapist

Title: The Use of Lavender Sleeplessness due to Depression and Anxiety

Introduction

Kristopher is a 92-year retired journalist.  He relocated to Lorton, Virginia from his hometown of Hayward, California three years ago to live with his daughter because of his ailing health. His former career allowed him to travel around the world and his good nature and gracious personality earned him many friends during his travels. Kristopher loves reading, a glass of fine wine occasionally, storytelling, and spending quality time with his family.

History

I was first introduced to Kristopher in June of 2017 as his home health care-giver. His family felt he needed a companion to be with him and help him with his daily upkeep while they were at work because of his declining health. He and I got along right from the beginning. Some of the things we had in common included a shared love for reading, appreciation of creative arts, and traveling.

My time with Kristopher was spent by helping him with his meal preparations, transporting him to his doctor’s appointments, Library, and senior recreational centers, reminding him to take his medications, and whatever assistance he needed to improve his quality of life.

The medications he was on included Atorvastatin (to treat high cholesterol levels), Lisinopril (to treat high blood pressure) Donepezil (to treat light dementia), and Latanoprost, Dorzolamide, Brimonidine eye drops to treat glaucoma in his right eye.

In the fall of 2017, Kristopher fell on his way to use the bathroom at night. He broke his right femur as a result of the fall and underwent an emergency hip replacement surgery.  The surgery was successful but the recovery took a toll on him physically, mentally, and emotionally. Daily physical therapy left him feeling exhausted and not being able to go out as he was used to. This left him feeling depressed and anxious. This new development greatly affected his sleep pattern, especially at night.

It was at this point that I asked and was granted permission by his daughter to help him have a good night’s sleep with aromatherapy.

Details of Essential Oil Blend

5 drops of Lavender in a diffuser filled with water at bedtime

Rationale

I chose a single oil because of the client’s age and frail health. I did not want to shock or overwhelm him with different smells all at once.  I wanted to use an oil that was mild and safe and was not going to cause any contraindications with his health medications. I specifically chose lavender because the client’s favorite hand lotion contains lavender and I felt it will be a familiar and comforting smell for him.

The key chemical constituents of Linalool 39.1% and Linalyl acetate 36.2% (Tisserand & Young, 2014) found in Lavender, gives it its antidepressant and sedative properties (Lawless 2013). A study entitled “The Effect of Aromatherapy

on Sleep Quality of Elderly People Residing in a Nursing Home” done by (Faydali & Cetinkaya, 2018) revealed that there was an improvement in the quality of sleep quality of nursing home residents who inhaled lavender oil drops on their pillows every evening for a week before sleeping.

Client Response to Treatment:

The client responded very well to the treatment. The floral, sweet, and clean smell of Lavender proved to be relaxing and calming for him. His restlessness and anxiety gave way to relaxation and sleep a few minutes after he inhaled the aromatic treatment. The treatment was administered for a week. This helped to get him back on a sleep schedule. After the first week, aromatic treatment was given as needed.

Conclusion and Reflection

The use of Lavender essential oil proved to be an effective treatment for sleeplessness as a result of depression and anxiety in an elderly client.  As a result of the client being able to get a good night’s sleep, his recovery drastically improved.

He had more energy for physical therapy and the symptoms of his anxiety became minimized.  I also introduced the playing of` soothing, relaxing, and meditative music in the background during his bedtime. This has helped greatly in setting his mood for a goodnight’s sleep.

This case study has been very rewarding for me as I saw first-hand how single oil can be so instrumental in making such a huge difference in a person’s life. Less is truly more when it comes to Essential oils and the power each oil possesses cannot be exaggerated.
