Sleeplessness due to Anxiety and Depression Case Study

Anna Owusu, Certified Aromatherapist

Title: The Use of Lavender Sleeplessness due to Depression and Anxiety

Introduction

Kristopher is a 92-year retired journalist.  He relocated to Lorton, Virginia from his hometown of Hayward, California three years ago to live with his daughter because of his ailing health. His former career allowed him to travel around the world and his good nature and gracious personality earned him many friends during his travels. Kristopher loves reading, a glass of fine wine occasionally, storytelling, and spending quality time with his family.

History

I was first introduced to Kristopher in June of 2017 as his home health care-giver. His family felt he needed a companion to be with him and help him with his daily upkeep while they were at work because of his declining health. He and I got along right from the beginning. Some of the things we had in common included a shared love for reading, appreciation of creative arts, and traveling.

My time with Kristopher was spent by helping him with his meal preparations, transporting him to his doctor’s appointments, Library, and senior recreational centers, reminding him to take his medications, and whatever assistance he needed to improve his quality of life.

The medications he was on included Atorvastatin (to treat high cholesterol levels), Lisinopril (to treat high blood pressure) Donepezil (to treat light dementia), and Latanoprost, Dorzolamide, Brimonidine eye drops to treat glaucoma in his right eye.

In the fall of 2017, Kristopher fell on his way to use the bathroom at night. He broke his right femur as a result of the fall and underwent an emergency hip replacement surgery.  The surgery was successful but the recovery took a toll on him physically, mentally, and emotionally. Daily physical therapy left him feeling exhausted and not being able to go out as he was used to. This left him feeling depressed and anxious. This new development greatly affected his sleep pattern, especially at night.

It was at this point that I asked and was granted permission by his daughter to help him have a good night’s sleep with aromatherapy.

Details of Essential Oil Blend

5 drops of Lavender in a diffuser filled with water at bedtime

Rationale

I chose a single oil because of the client’s age and frail health. I did not want to shock or overwhelm him with different smells all at once.  I wanted to use an oil that was mild and safe and was not going to cause any contraindications with his health medications. I specifically chose lavender because the client’s favorite hand lotion contains lavender and I felt it will be a familiar and comforting smell for him.

The key chemical constituents of Linalool 39.1% and Linalyl acetate 36.2% (Tisserand & Young, 2014) found in Lavender, gives it its antidepressant and sedative properties (Lawless 2013). A study entitled “The Effect of Aromatherapy

on Sleep Quality of Elderly People Residing in a Nursing Home” done by (Faydali & Cetinkaya, 2018) revealed that there was an improvement in the quality of sleep quality of nursing home residents who inhaled lavender oil drops on their pillows every evening for a week before sleeping.

Client Response to Treatment:

The client responded very well to the treatment. The floral, sweet, and clean smell of Lavender proved to be relaxing and calming for him. His restlessness and anxiety gave way to relaxation and sleep a few minutes after he inhaled the aromatic treatment. The treatment was administered for a week. This helped to get him back on a sleep schedule. After the first week, aromatic treatment was given as needed.

Conclusion and Reflection

The use of Lavender essential oil proved to be an effective treatment for sleeplessness as a result of depression and anxiety in an elderly client.  As a result of the client being able to get a good night’s sleep, his recovery drastically improved.

He had more energy for physical therapy and the symptoms of his anxiety became minimized.  I also introduced the playing of` soothing, relaxing, and meditative music in the background during his bedtime. This has helped greatly in setting his mood for a goodnight’s sleep.

This case study has been very rewarding for me as I saw first-hand how single oil can be so instrumental in making such a huge difference in a person’s life. Less is truly more when it comes to Essential oils and the power each oil possesses cannot be exaggerated.

How I overcame COVID with Herbs, Vitamins, Essential Oils & Flower Essences?

Hello, I am 61 years and have been in natural health since I was 28 years old. I haven’t used any medication ever since. So here goes my COVID- 19 story with Herbs, Vitamins, Essential Oils, and Flower Essences.

My youngest daughter, Zoe came home with a fever, headache and body aches. 2 days later she tested positive for COVID-19.

For her fever- I started placing apple cider vinegar in compresses all over her body to hydrate her; Then I layered 5 drops of Niaouli in 1oz. Arnica macerated oil on top of that for her body aches. I continued to do this as the compresses became warm and added more vinegar to them to cool her down. She also was taking cool baths with 5 drops of Ravintsara and 5 drops of Lemon.

I also gave her 1000mg of Vitamin C every hour while she had the fever.

Herbs – I gave her a tsp of a Traditional Chinese Herbal formulation for Viruses every 2 hours. I also decided to give her the cleansing and detoxing herbs that I use in my Dynamic Detox Program – Liver Cleansing Herbal formulation for her Liver (2capsules) 3 times per day. Now you are probably saying why would you do that when it is supposed to be a Viral Respiratory condition. Our liver cleanses and builds our blood so it is important to help it do its job by supporting it with herbs such as Dandelion, Red beet root, Parsley leaf, Horsetail, Yellow dock root, Black cohosh root, Birch leaf, Blessed thistle, Chamomile flowers, Gentian root, and Golden Rod.

To keep her bowels open and help her liver eliminate the toxins coming from the virus I had her take 2 coffee enemas per day which mean she had to drink (6) fresh juices per day to keep up her electrolytes. You can learn more about this tomorrow when you receive my video on my Dynamic Detox program that begins on February 26th, 2022. CLICK HERE

Well after 2 days I came down with it and I started on the same program as I began Zoe on. My shins began to hurt so badly that I had Zoe rub them with the Niaouli and Arnica blend. My head hurt so bad that I had nausea and wanted to throw up but nothing would come out. Peppermint and Ginger Tea were made and taken every time we needed to drink to help with the inflammation of the whole digestive tract and nausea. You can use 3 tea bags of each herb to a liter of boiling water. Let steep for 8 to 10 minutes and drink continuously. To further reduce the inflammation of the digestive tract each morning we drank 1 tbsp of Aloe Vera Juice in our Granny Green apple juice with 1 tbsp liquid chlorophyll and 1 tbsp Psyllium hulls.

The tea and coffee enemas also really helped with a burning sensation that comes from the liver sending too much bile back into the stomach which is an acid organ and as we know bile and acid don’t mix. The liver is trying to get the toxins out of the body as it gets rid of the virus.

I also started sniffing Rosemary 1.8 cineole from the bottle because I noticed my sense of taste and smell had left me. Zoe’s had too. Ravintsara and Lemon essential oils were put on a Q tip directly into put into my nostrils twice daily to keep the sinuses, bronchioles, and lungs open and keep mucous from becoming too sticky. Please be careful using them this way and check to make sure your nose can handle this. If not, dilute 12 drops of Ravintsara and Lemon in 1oz. Apricot oil. We also took 2 capsules 3 times daily of an herbal formulation which contains – Fennel seed, fenugreek seed, boneset aerial parts, horseradish root extract, and mullein leaf extract that soothes the respiratory tract along with 1 tsp twice daily of Black Walnut extract to oxygenate the blood and burn up excessive toxins and help to balance the blood sugar. 1 tsp three times daily of Pau d’ Arco ( Taheebo) liquid extract contains high amounts of iron, which aids the body in simulating nutrients, and the elimination of wastes. It is a powerful natural antibiotic with virus-killing properties (Tenney,1983). In the bath twice daily I placed a warm compress of 1 drop Ravintsara and 1 drop of Lemon essential oils with warm water on my chest to break up anything that might try to come into my chest.

As for Vitamins, Enzymes, and Foods – we took (3) Zinc per day for the beneficial effects it has on the immune system which includes decreased susceptibility to and improved clinical outcomes for infectious pathogens including multiple viruses (Joachimiak, 2021) It also helps with the loss of smell and taste (Joachimiak, 2021, Ritchason,1986,). I took enzymes to help me break down my foods because my body couldn’t take in any heavy foods. We only took in juices, teas, fresh fruit each morning such as peaches, nectarines, plums, and apples along with potassium broth for the first 4 days. Then my husband made my daughter and me some beef broth that we ate on the 5th day and then I asked him to make me a chicken soup with onions, celery, potatoes, and garlic. I ate that for 2 more days. After two weeks, I am continuing the juices, teas, fresh fruit, salads, soups, and steamed veggies. In my opinion, let your body fight the virus don’t overload it with food give it enough of the right things – Potassium, Vitamin C, Vitamin A and B Vitamins such as (Niacin B3 for the lungs 25 mg with each juice) and Liquid B12 keep your energy up and recover – 1 tsp mid-morning. We also took (2) CoQ- 10 which as an antioxidant has proved to be of potential use as a treatment in diseases which are caused by oxidative stress such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and neurodegenerative diseases (Gutierrez-Mariscal FM et al. 2020)

I also reached out to my herbalist and aromatherapist friend, Diane Maiorisi, who has a machine that sends out good vibes (radio frequencies). I had her send me Stomach Disorders and Liver Cleanse. It helped the heaviness that my body was feeling. Here is the link to the site where you can get a machine and tell them Diane sent you. Click here

Last but not least steam inhalation twice daily of 5 drops Rosemary 1.8 cineole, 3 drops Ravintsara, and 2 drops lemon in a pan of hot water. Turned boiling water off and put the essential oils in it then I put a towel over my head and breathed the vapors for 3 minutes. This helped with my sense of smell and taste. It is slowly coming back – I now can smell menthol from peppermint, 1.8 cineole that is in the Rosemary 1.8 cineole, and Ravintsara essential oils. I can taste bitter and sweet. It sounds like a song bitter-sweet. Well, it has been challenging emotionally too. First of all, I was angry with the Virus/ Pandemic whole deal and I became very apathetic which isn’t very much like me. I started using these flower essences- Wild Rose for apathy, Willow for resentment and boy did I have resentment; Scleranthus to keep clear me on my decisions that I was looking at making, and Olive for physical fatigue. I took 4 drops under my tongue as often as needed for the first 9 days. On the 10th day, I started using 4 drops of Gorse for my depressive mood along with 4 drops of Self-heal to take full responsibility for my health and wellbeing. Click here to purchase these flower essences.

After the third day of having COVID – 19, I started to walk up to the top of the hill in Domaine de Castillou to keep my body moving and it restored my strength.

Zoe and I have completely recovered and you can too.

Remember to stay hydrated, rest, and take good care of yourself.

If you decide to purchase any herbs or vitamins – I have been a distributor for Nature Sunshine for 33 years and my distributor number is 574488. I will get a little commission. The rest of the products that I have suggested I get no commissions on. It is to help you have good products in your hands.

I hope this information helps you, a family member, or a friend.

Better Health and Happiness,

Lorrie

Summer Fragrance with Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lavender and Sandalwood

Hello Everyone,

I just love to wear fresh, fruity, flowery and woody essential oils for my personal summer fragrance. When it is hot  as it is France in the summer time this kind of fragrance uplifts, cools and energizes me. As a researcher and developer of Organic perfumes and skin care based on aromatherapy for over 11 years; one of my favorite kind of formulations to develop is perfume.  This isn’t as  easy it seems because there a lot of rules surrounding perfume especially when using one of my favorite sweet, fresh, fruity and flowery essential oils that has a beautiful green color- Bergamot. The reason it is so hard to use is because of its photo toxicity. In September, when I offer my 240 hour Aromatherapy program one of the things that I will be teaching will be how to  safely formulate  perfume and skin care products . This is why in this Summer Fragrance I have only used a very small amount of bergamot.  I also give you pointers on how to wear a perfume in the video. If you do not want to wear it as a perfume you can use it to freshen up your room.

Here is the  Summer Fragrance formulation:

I have placed the essential oils in drops which equals 3% of the formulation

2 drop Bergamot Essential Oil

24 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil

10 drops Lavender Essential Oil

10 drops Sandalwood Essential Oil

89% Organic alcohol= 1.78 ounces

7% Water= 0.14 ounces

1% Organic Vegetable Glycerine= 0.02 ounces

2oz Amber or colored bottle with sprayer.

Mix alcohol, glycerine and water together. Place  alcohol mixture into the bottle then add essential oils. Roll the bottle between your hands to mix the ingredients together. Put on sprayer.

Contraindications- Photo toxic.

Enjoy the video-

Don’t forget your Essential Oils, Use your Common Scents,

All The Best,

Lorrie
